EMPOWERStudents!

EMPOWERStudents! is a volunteer and intern program that encourages students to become locally and civically engaged regardless of age, citizenship or voting status.

EMPOWERStudents! provides grassroots leadership training, mentorship, organizing support, service-learning and community-based action and research opportunities. Volunteers and interns are involved in organizing community education about the 2010 Census and ongoing voter engagement projects. They also undertake translation and bilingual communications initiatives, participate in fundraising, donor development and member outreach, and are beginning to lead local web-based government watch, viral media and social media initiatives.

Civic Matters - our newest program!

Civic Matters is an initiative to inform and educate San Diegans about the opportunities for public participation in San Diego that will affect public policy and political representation. In 2010, the Civic Matters campaign will be working with the EMPOWERStudents! Intern Team to do 2010 Census outreach and voter registration/education on local campuses in preparation for the June 8th, 2010 Primary Election.

Empower San Diego is devoted to establishing opportunities for individuals and communities to be civically engaged and to be informed when they go to the polls. Our voter engagement work is a blend of two organizing styles: civic engagment and voter education. We feel that with a combined approach we will both help create a more civic-minded community and an informed voting community.

The Democracy Dialogues

The Democracy Dialogues Proect is a series of public forums on structural issues vital to strengthening local democracy in San Diego.

Strong Mayor

On June 8th, the people of San Diego voted in favor of Proposition D, making the Strong Mayor form of government permanent. As a result, a ninth district will be added to the political boundaries of San Diego; a Citizen's Redistricting Commission is being established to redraw the borders of each respective district. We are working to ensure San Diegans are fully informed about the implications of this issue. For further information, please visit our San Diego Redistricting page.
